MindSpring partnered with a leading global manufacturing organization specializing in state of-the-art paper converting equipment that was designed to handle large quantities of paper and fold it into everyday products such as napkins and paper towels. This equipment was highly specialized and valuable. One of the biggest challenges their customers faced was ensuring they had operators who were properly trained to run, maintain, and troubleshoot the machinery. Without trained operators, the equipment was useless, resulting in lost productivity and revenue. The manufacturing company faced a common challenge in their industry: the need for Just-in-Time Training—when and where any user needed it. Traditionally, they would send one of their staff members (with a lengthy paper manual) onsite for up to three months. This expert-in-residence would set up, service, and train the customer’s team. However, this process was costly and inefficient, including significant expenses for travel, lodging, and lost productivity. The company approached MindSpring with a challenge: could Immersive Work Instructions, an AR learning experience, be designed to capture the knowledge of their own expert, package it, and make it into an easily repeatable training experience that could not only be delivered to their customers but even sold to them, adding value over the giant paper manual?
To meet the challenge, MindSpring worked closely with subject matter experts (SMEs) from the company to record and document the best training from the most experienced trainers. Filtered through the best practices in learning science, MindSpring’s instructional designers mapped an immersive work instructions plan that moved seamlessly from mixed reality pre-training to a full step-by-step simulation that locked directly onto the machine.
Leveraged wearable augmented reality technology allowing operators to practice using a digital twin of the machine
Designed an interactive, engaging, and safe virtual environment to train in before working with real machinery
Provided operators with an immersive and effective learning path
MindSpring’s interactive AR experience enabled the manufacturing company to implement a more efficient and effective training program— for both themselves and their customers. By replacing on-site training with a Immersive Work Instructions and a headset, loaded with training and troubleshooting guides, the company and its clients were able to:
Save costs associated with travel, training, and machine downtime
Ensured that maintenance was done properly and documented through training that was repeatable and scalable
Turn troubleshooting into a systematic digital checklist developed by the people who designed the machine
Reduce guesswork, increase efficiency, and move everyone more rapidly toward realizing a return on their investment (ROI)
Step into the future of training and operational excellence. With immersive work instructions, you can:
Don’t let outdated methods hold your team back.
